”Wait, Robin, Robin?” The same one who sat above her apartment window sometimes? That same Robin who saved her from two knife-wielding men once? The same one who gave her that little necklace? She squeezed back as her free hand clutched the bat beneath her blouse. Jason was the one who gave her this?
Her voice lowered a little. “Seriously? You’re not just messin’ with me right?”
"Of course I’m not! I’m being seriously serious right now!“ His voice was raised a tad higher than he wanted, but he didn’t want her to think he was being anything but truthful right now.
That wasn’t something she was prepared to hear, but whatever it was he wanted to say she’d hear him out. No matter what he told her she wouldn’t, what’d he call it, freak out? There was no promise behind that, but she would at least try.
”…Oh… kay. Um. Well. I love you, so, I promise no matter what you have to say, I’m not gonna freak out on you.”
That look. Oh, god, that look. He couldn’t stand to see that look on such a sweet person’s face. Jason shoved his face into his palms with a strained groan. He pushed his face away from his hands after a moment and reached over, giving her hands a gentle, and hopefully reassuring, squeeze with his own.
"I…“ Damn, this was way more difficult than he thought this would be. Best to just out with it. "I wanted you to know that I’m…”
His smile was reassuring and awful nice to see, but what he said next wasn’t exactly what she was expecting to hear. Maybe he was just going to tell her to take it easy with everything ; maybe he was going to just say something other than what people usually said after saying such a string of words.
“Oh. Okay.”
So, she was just a little nervous. Hopefully he wouldn’t be able to tell.
“What do you wanna talk about?”
"I haven’t exactly been…truthful to you.“ Okay, that sounds bad? Sounds like something that would make a pregnant woman upset. Sounds like he was about to confess he’s been cheating on her this whole time, or using her, or worse. …Whatever’s worse than that. –Maybe he should start over.
"I’ve been hiding something from you, and…I think it’s about time I told you. So–please don’t…I dunno…freak out?” Slightly better.
{ She’s got a stack of papers in her hands and looks very, very excited }
“Hey, Jay? I wrote a big long list of names - do’you want to pick one you like? Or, should we just wait until they’re born?”
"That’s…a long list.“ He couldn’t help but crack a smile over how excited she looked over all this baby stuff, when he didn’t even have barely make time at all for it himself, with how much patrolling he’s been having to do lately. Speaking of which…
“Jason… baby… You know, I love you. And the longer we’re together the more I will. And um…”
The kiss was calming her, settling her stomach. But what was inside her was telling her to just spit it out before she began to talk about something else. She took his free hand and squeezed it.
“I’m late by about four weeks… I think I’m pregnant.”
Though it was pretty hard trying to contain every impulsive urge in his bones, he still remained straight-faced. It took everything he had not to explode.
"Preg… You’re…pregnant?“
Dealing with situations he hasn’t already prepared for coming in, definitely weren’t Jason’s specialty. This was just, so unexpected. Sure, they weren’t the most cautious of people when they were together. But to think there was a little him growing inside the belly of the girl beside him…it was just…
[ breathing in, breathing out, it was easy in his arms; easier and easier. she held him close and ignored the noise from the tv behind her. it was so comforting she could fall asleep ]
”I feel so safe with you, Jay. And this is so nice…”
”…I love you.”
[ aaand there it is. it took literally three words for him to snap out of his drowsy state. though, as wide awake as he was right now, sally looked like she had already dozed off. he’d be a real jerk if he woke her up. pressing an affectionate kiss in her hair, jason comforted her closer.]
"I love you too, Sal.“
[to think someone with a childhood like jason’s, could be so lucky to grow up to catch a girl this shockingly perfect… it’s just…absolutely overwhelming. ]
